Perry's original name was Wharton, the name of a train station built in 1886 by the Southern Kansas Railway.  The Dalton Gang entered Wharton to rob a train in May 1891 netting $1745.  At noon on September 16, 1893, "a run" for land was opened. An estimated 100,000 men, women, and children took part and by nightfall 40,000 had erected tents in Perry.  The famous female outlaw “Little Britches” lived in Perry in 1895.  Timothy McVeigh was stopped and apprehended on I-35 near Perry on April 19, 1995.  Today Perry offers many attractions and events including the annual “Cherokee Strip” celebration.  Celebrating the town’s foundation.

Slapout Brunette

The name Slapout Oklahoma, according to local legend, came about because customers at the store in Nye were often told by Lemmon's sister that the store was "slapout" of whatever they wanted.  Tom Lemmons insisted his sister never used the phrase. However, the name stuck. When Tom continued to insist his side of the highway was called Nye, patrons responded that the south side of the highway could be "Slapout" and the north side with Lemmon's store was "Nye Out.”  Today the gas station in the town is a regular stop for Tulsa and Oklahoma City skiers traveling to Colorado.
